An excerpt from the January WinCustomize newsletter:

In March WinCustomize plans to help sponsor the GUI Olympics 2004. Two years ago the GUI Olympics was an inter-website skinning contest. The subject-matter was WindowBlinds 3. A lot has happened since then and skinning has grown even more popular.
You can see the skins (visual styles) from the last GUI Olympics here. Some of the best, most original skins of all time were made during that period. The GUI Olympics already has 2 big sponsors lined up and is hoping to get even more. Even at this early stage we've got $10,000 in cash and prizes committed to it. The categories will be WindowBlinds, Icon packages, and one of the popular media players. The categories will range from most creative, most practical, minimalist, power user, and so forth. Stay tuned for more news, hopefully by the next WinCustomize Magazine we'll have more details.

This is just GREAT! I can't wait to see it start! What a competition it's gonna be! The very best of luck to all the skinners!

Is there linkage anywhere yet with more details about GUIO2004?

During the last 2 years and a half I have being a professional skinner, not having time to release free skins, but if this contest really happens, you can count on me, I am really missing the skinning for fun! GO! GO!

Should be much nicer and calmer since Shoggot isn't here to stir things up. I volunteer my services to judge... if you need an extra one.

If it is in March I won't have anything to enter most likely, but I will enjoy the heck out of it even if I do not

Ooh... count me in.

(and hello Treetog...)

To avoid possible 'skinner spotting' influencing people's voting (or judge's voting - not sure if there is to be a "people's choice"), would there be a way in which skins could be submitted anonymously? Then the skinner revealed after the marking?

The other thing is, everyone has their own strengths. I can see how well I would do in the icon category!!

I look forward to the competition details.

your still one one of the two at the top of my favorites, essorant and I don't see that changing. Icons or not!

Good idea essorant!

Anonymity may not be a total success as some skinners can be recognised by their style....
on Feb 03, 2004

I am with Paul on this, the style of some authors is easily recognized, I would recognize a skin made by Essorant miles away from it.

btw, howdy BakerStreet and Essorant GO! GO!

I can't wait to see the people that we haven't seen in months (or years) enter this. Does anybody remember a man called "Dangeruss". He had some fantastic skins. That's just one that is of the top of my head. There are so many good artist, it would be a long list.
And I have to agree with paul, also. It would be to easy to spot.
We have a ton of questions, that might not be answered until the end of the month, but I'm happy to see the bug still biting people. (skinning bug, that is).

I'm sure Russ pops by when he gets a chance....unless he's off bush-bashing on his deadly treadly...
